Call for Paper Navies in War and Peace, 1754-1989
Recent years have seen a new expansion of naval history. With new aspects of the subject being researched and current perspectives being expanded, the attraction of the subject to new scholars has grown, and in response fresh and innovative questions are being addressed. This conference provides an opportunity for researchers to present papers before an audience of research students, naval personnel, and recognized authorities in Naval History including N.A.M. Rodger and Andrew Lambert. Speakers will give papers of twenty minutes on their current research followed by ten minutes of questions from a supportive audience.
The evolution of navies in response to local and global challenges through war and peace is a recurrent issue that is seen in both past and present. Thus, the conference focuses on how naval powers of the past coped with these issues in reaction to the challenges they believed lay ahead and further asks what lessons can be learned for today. Papers are welcomed on social, economic, political, legal, cultural, operational, technological, and intellectual aspects of naval history in current perspective. Researchers of neighbouring disciplines are particularly encouraged to participate and share their approach to naval history.
Those wishing to present a paper should send a proposed title and abstract of no more than 300 words by email attachment along with a short CV to the conference organising committee; Jeremiah Dancy (University of Oxford), Gabriela Frei (University of Oxford), and Hiraku Yabuki (King's College London) at navalhistconoxon@googlemail.com.
The deadline is Friday 18 December 2009 (Please note that we are no longer accepting any proposal)
Announcements to applicants will be made in mid-January 2010. Accommodation and travel fees for speakers will be subsidised. Anyone interested in attending the conference without presenting a paper is warmly welcomed to register an interest via email as early as possible due to limited space; further information will be sent out in due course.
There will be conference fees for participants who do not give papers. It covers the cost of refreshments, wine, lunch and dinner, etc.
